Lauds: Monday, wk 1

During Lent, this O.T. Canticle, based on Joel 2:12-18,
replaces the one for ordinary time

"Come back to me with all your heart."
It is your God who speaks.
"With fasting, weeping and mourning,
rend your hearts and not your garments."

Return to the Holy One your God,
who is all tenderness and compassion,
who is slow to anger, rich in kindness,
and always ready to relent.

Blow the trumpet in Zion!
Proclaim a fast, call an assembly;
gather the people together,
assemble the old and the young.

Between the vestibule and the altar,
let the priests lament and say:
"O God, spare your people!
Do not put your heritage to shame.

Why should it be said among the nations,
Where is their God?"
Then, moved to concern for the land,
God took pity on the people.

Psalm 29: (God's majesty in the storm)

Give glory to God, O heavenly beings,
pay homage to the power of the Holy One.
Glorify the name of the Almighty.
Adore the God of majesty and holiness.

The voice of God is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders.
Over mighty waters is the Most High,
whose voice is majesty and power.

The voice of God breaks the cedars,
shatters the cedars of Lebanon;
it makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.

God's voice kindles flames of fire,
and makes the desert quake;
it shakes the wilderness of Kadesh,

God's voice leaves the oak trees spinning,
and strips the forest bare.
In the temple of God all cry: "Glory!"

Over the floods God is enthroned,
and reigns as King forever.
O God, give strength to your people!
O God, bless your people with peace!

Psalm 5: (Morning prayer for protection)

Listen to my words, O God;
consider my inmost thoughts.
Hear my cry for help,
my king and my God.

For to you, O God, I pray;
in the morning you hear my voice.
I offer you a morning sacrifice;
keeping vigil, I wait for you.

You are not a God who loves wickedness;
no evildoer remains in your presence.
Before you the boastful may not stand;
you turn away from those who do evil.

You put an end to those who lie.
Violence and deceit you abhor.
But because of your steadfast love,
I may enter your house.

I bow in worship at your holy temple.
In your righteousness lead me, O God;
make clear your way that I may follow,
for I am beset by many foes.

None of their words are truthful;
destruction is in their hearts;
their throats are like open graves;
they flatter with their tongues.

Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own schemes.
Cast them away for their many sins,
for they have rebelled against you.

All who trust you, O God, will sing for joy;
those who love your name will rejoice.
For you bless and protect the upright;
you cover them with favor as with a shield.

O.T. Canticle, based on 1Samuel 12:1-3,6-10

My heart finds joy in my God;
my strength is exalted in the Most High.
My mouth derides my foes,
for I rejoice in God’s power to save.

There is no other Holy One,
no other Rock like our God!

Do not speak with haughty words,
nor let arrogance be in your speech,
for our God is all-knowing,
and will judge everyone’s deeds.

God puts to death and gives life,
casts down to Sheol and raises up.
The Most High makes poor and makes rich;
some are put down and others lifted up.

God raises the needy from the dust,
and from the ash-heap lifts up the poor,
to give them a place among princes,
and assign them a seat of honor.

God safeguards the steps of the faithful,
but the wicked are lost in the darkness,
for not by strength will they triumph;
the enemies of God will be shattered.

The Most High in heaven thunders;
God judges the ends of the earth.

Psalm 99: The ower and holiness of God

God reigns; let the nations tremble.
God is throned on the cherubim; the earth quakes.
The Most High is great in Zion.

The Almighty is exalted over all.
Let us praise God’s name for it is great.
Holy is our God!

“O God, you are a lover of justice,
demanding goodness, justice and right,
as you established them in Jacob.”

Proclaim the greatness of the Most High,
and worship before God’s footstool.
Holy is our God!

Moses and Aaron were among the priests,
Samuel among those who invoked the holy name;
they called out and God answered them.

God spoke to them in the pillar of cloud.
They observed the divine commands,
and kept the laws and decrees.

O God, you responded to them,
and you let them know your forgiveness,
though you punished their evil deeds.

Proclaim the greatness of the Most High!
and worship before the holy mountain:
Holy is our God!
