Lauds: Saturday, wk 2

During Lent, this O.T. Canticle, based on Isaiah 43:10-12,22-25,
replaces the one for ordinary time

God declares: You are my witnesses,
my servants whom I have chosen,
to know me and believe in me,
and to understand that I am your God.

Before me no god existed
and after me there shall be none.
It is I alone who am your God;
there is no other Savior but me.

I have made it known and declared it,
when there was no other god among you.
And you are my witnesses, says the Holy One;
from everlasting, I am God.

Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob,
for you grew weary of me, O Israel.
You brought me no offerings from your flocks,
nor did you honor me with sacrifice.

Instead, you burdened me with your sins,
and wearied me with your crimes.
But I am God, and I wipe out your offenses,
your sins I will remember no more.

Psalm 96  (Universal reign of the true God)
Sing to God a new song;
sing to God all the earth.

Bless the Name of the Most High every day,
and tell the good news of salvation.
Among the nations declare God’s glory,
to all peoples recount those saving deeds.
For God is great and worthy of praise,
to be feared above all other gods.
The gods of the nations are mere idols;
it was our God who made the heavens.
Oh, the majesty and splendor of God’s Presence!
In the sanctuary are beauty and power.
Give to God, you families of nations,
to the Most High give glory and praise.
Give glory as the Name of God deserves;
bring gifts into the courts of the Most High.
Adore God in the splendor of holiness.
Earth, tremble before the Holy Presence!
Say to all the nations: “Our God reigns,”
who has made the world firm in its place,
who will judge the peoples with equity.”
Let the heavens be glad and earth rejoice;
let the sea and what fills it resound.
Let the fields and all within them exult,
all the trees of the forest shout for joy,
At the Presence of the Holy One who comes,
who comes to rule the earth.
God will judge the world with justice,
and all the peoples with truth.

Psalm 80  (Plea for the return of God’s favor)
Hear us, O shepherd of Israel,
you who guide Joseph like a flock.
Enthroned on the cherubim, shine forth,
upon Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh.
Stir up your power and come to our rescue;
restore us again, O God;
show the light of your Face and save us!
O God of power and might,
how long will you be angry,
in spite of the prayers of your people?

You have fed us with the bread of tears,
with tears in abundance to drink.
We are objects of scorn to our neighbors;
our enemies laugh and deride us.

Look kindly, O God of power and might;
show the light of your Face and save us!
You brought a vine out of Egypt;
to plant it you drove out the nations.
You cleared a place for it;
it took root and filled the land.
The mountains were covered by its shade,
and the cedar trees with its boughs.
Its branches reached out to the sea;
its shoots as far as the river.

Now why have you broken down its hedge,
so that all who pass by pluck its fruit?
It is ravaged by the boar of the forest,
and the beasts of the field feed upon it.
Turn to us, O God of power and might,
Look down from heaven, and see;
behold, and tend to this vine;
preserve what your right hand has planted.

They burn it with fire and cut it down;
rebuke them; let their evil deeds perish.
Let your hand be on the One you have chosen,
the One you made strong for yourself.

We will not turn away from you again;
give us life and we will call on your name.
Look kindly, O God of power and might;
show the light of your Face and save us!

O.T.Canticle, based on Sirach 36:1-5,7,14-17

Come to our aid, O God of the universe,
and put all the nations in dread of you!
Raise your hand against unbelievers,
that they may realize your power.

As you showed them your holiness through us,
now show us your glory through them.
Then they will know as we have known
that there is no other God but you.

Give new signs and work new wonders;
show forth the splendor of your right hand.
Hasten the day, bring on the time;
crush the power of the hostile rulers.

Show evidence of your deeds of old,
fulfill prophecies spoken in your name.
Reward those who have hoped in you,
and show that your prophets were true.

Hear the prayer of your servants,
for you are ever gracious to your people;
then all the ends of the earth will know
that you are the eternal God.

Psalm 86  (Loyalty in God’s service)
Turn your ear, O God, and give answer,
for I am afflicted and poor.

I am devoted to you, protect me;
save me, I trust in you.
Be merciful to me, you are my God;
I call upon you all the day long.

Fill the heart of your servant with joy;
to you I lift up my soul.
O God, you are gracious and forgiving;
full of love to all who call upon you.
Listen to my prayer, O God;
be attentive when I cry for help.
On the day of distress I call to you,
for I know that you will answer.

Among the gods there is no one like you,
and nothing like the works you have done.

All nations will come to adore you
and glorify your name, O Holy One.
You are great, you work such wonders;
you alone are God.

Teach me your ways, O God,
and I will walk in your truth.
Give me an undivided heart,
with reverence for your Name.

With all my heart, I thank you;
I will glorify your Name forever.
Your unfailing love for me is great;
you saved me from the depths of Sheol.
The arrogant rise to attack me;
violent foes seek my life;
you have no place in their thoughts.

But you are a God of compassion,
slow to anger, abounding in mercy,
rich in faithful and steadfast love.

Turn to me, now, give me strength;
rescue the child of your handmaid.
Show me a sign of your favor,
then my enemies will be ashamed.
They will see that you, O God,
have helped me and given me comfort.
