Lauds: Sunday of Lent

Psalm 95: A Call to Worship

Come, let us sing with joy to God,
and acclaim the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before God giving thanks,
with songs of rejoicing and praise.

For the Almighty is a great God,
who rules over all other gods,
in whose hands are the depths of the earth,
and even the mountain heights.

The sea belongs to God who made it,
whose hands have formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before our Creator,

For the Holy One is our God;
we are the flock God leads as a shepherd
who pastured the sheep with care.

If only you would hear God's voice today!
"Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as on that day a Massah in the desert.

Your ancestors put me to the test,
even though they had seen my works.
For forty years they tried me, then I said:

They are a people of wayward hearts,
who have no regard for my ways."
Therefor I swore in my anger,
that they would not enter my rest.

Psalm 51: Prayer of Repentance

Have mercy on me, O God,
in your unfailing love.
In your abundant compassion,
blot out my evil deeds.

Thoroughly wash away my guilt,
and cleanse me of my sin.
I acknowledge my transgressions;
my sin confonts me always.

Against you alone have I sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.

You are justified when you give sentence,
and righteous in your judgment.
I have been a sinner from my birth,
even when my mother conceived me.

You look for faithfulness deep within me;
teach me wisdom in my inmost heart.
Sprinkle me with hyssop and cleanse me;
I will be clean as the new fallen snow.

Let me hear of joy and gladness,
that the bones you have crushed may rejoice.
Turn your face away from my sin,
and wash away my guilt.

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and put a new spirit within me.
Do not cast me out from your presence,
nor take your holy spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and a willing spirit to uphold me,
then I will teach your ways to the wicked,
that sinners may return to you.

Deliver me from death, O my Savior,
and my tongue will declare your goodness.
O God, open my lips,
and my mouth will proclaim your praise.

In sacrifice you find no delight;
burnt offering you do not desire.
My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit,
a humble, contrite heart you will not spurn.

Be merciful and gracious to Zion,
and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
Appointed sacrifices then will please you;
young bulls will be offered on your altar.

O.T. Canticle, based on Hosea 6:1-6

In their distress they will beg my favor:
"Come, let us return to our God
who has torn us but will also heal us,
struck us, but will bind our wounds.

After two days, God will revive us,
and on the third day will raise us up
to live in the presence of the Holy One.

Let us know, let us press on to know our God,
whose appearing is as sure as the dawn,
who will come to us like the showers,
like spring rain that waters the earth."

Ephraim, what shall I do with you?
Judah, what shall I do with you?
Your love is like a morning cloud,
like the dew that soon disappears.

So I slew them by the words of my mouth;
my judgment goes forth as the light.
For I desire steadfast love, not sacrifice,
knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Psalm 148: Praise of all Creation

Praise God from the heavens,
and in the heights sing praise.
Praise God, all you angels,
with all the hevenly hosts.

Praise God, sun and moon,
and all you shining stars.
Praise God, highest heavens,
and waters above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of God,
by whose command they were created,
who set them in place for all time,
by a law that will not be changed.

Praise God from the earth,
sea monsters and ocean depths,
fire and hail, snow and mist,
stormy winds that obey God's word;

All mountains and hills,
all fruit trees and cedars,
wild animals and cattle,
creeping things and birda that fly.

All peoples and nations,
earth's leaders and rulers,
young men and women,
the young and the old together,

Praise the name of the Most High,
whose name alone is exalted,
for the majesty of God
is above heaven and earth.

God raised up strength for the people,
for the praise of all the faithful,
for the children of Israel,
a people to whom God comes near.
