Lauds: Thursday, wk 2

During Lent, this O.T. Canticle, based on Jeremiah 30:10,11,17-21,
replaces the one for ordinary time

God say: Have no fear my servant Jacob,
and do not be dismayed, O Israel.
From far away I am going to save you,
and bring your offspring from captivity.

For I am with you, God says, to save you.
I will restore you to health,
because they have called you an outcast:
"It is Zion; no one cares for her!"

See, I will restore the tents of Jacob,
and have compassion on their dwellings.
The city shall be rebuilt upon its hill,
and its stronghold restored as it was.

From them will come joyful songs of praise,
and the laughter of happy people.
I will make them not few, but many.
I will make them honored and not disdained.

Their children shall be as of old;
their assembly before me shall stand firm.
Their leader shall be one of their own;
their ruler shall come from their midst.

Psalm 47  (To God, king of the world)

Clap your hands, all you peoples;
shout to God with cries of joy.
For the Most High is to be feared;
a great king over all the earth.

God subdues peoples under us,
and puts nations at our feet.
God chose for us our heritage,
given to Jacob out of love.

God ascends amid acclamation,
in triumph, with the sound of trumpet.
Sing praise to God, sing praise;
sing praise to our king, sing praise.

For God is king over all the earth;
sing hymns of praise.
Enthroned on high, the Almighty
is Sovereign over all nations.

The nobles of the people come together
as the people of the God of Abraham.
The rulers of the earth belong to God,
who is exalted over all.

Psalm 81  (Festal song in harvest time)

Sing with joy to God our strength;
shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.
Take up the song and sound the timbrel,
the lyre, along with the harp.

Sound the trumpet at the new moon,
at the full moon on the day of the feast.
This is a law for Israel,
as decreed by the God of Jacob.

God laid this solemn charge upon Joseph,
when he came out from the land of Egypt.
A voice I did not know was heard:
“I lifted the burden from your shoulder.

I freed your hands from bearing the load.
You cried out in distress and I saved you.
I answered you, hidden in the storm cloud;
At the waters of Meribah I tested you.

Listen, my people, to my warning;
O Israel, if only you would hear me.
No other god shall be in your midst;
you shall not worship any foreign god.

For I am the Eternal One, your God,
who brought you from the land of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.”

But my people did not listen to my voice,
and Israel would not obey me,
so I left them in their stubbornness of heart
to follow their own ways.

O my people, if only you would listen;
if only you would walk in my ways!
Quickly I would conquer your enemies,
and lay a heavy hand against your foes.

All the enemies would cringe before me,
and their fate would be sealed forever.
But my people I would feed with finest wheat,
and satisfy with honey from the rock.

O.T. Canticle, based on 1Chronicles 29:10-14,17,18

May you be blessed, O God of Israel,
forever and forever.
Grandeur and power belong to you,
majesty, splendor and glory.

All in heaven and on earth is yours;
you are exalted over all.
Riches and honor are from you;
you have dominion over all.

In your hand are power and might.
Grandeur and strength are yours to give.
Therefore, O God, we give you thanks,
we praise your glorious name.

But who am I, and who are my people
that we can bring offerings like this?
Everything we have is from you;
all that we give is what we have received.

You take delight, O god, in upright hearts.
Your people here give freely and with joy.
Uphold this purpose always in their thoughts,
and guide their hearts forever toward yourself.

Psalm 67  (A harvest prayer)

O God, be gracious and bless us;
let the light of your face shine upon us.

May your ways be known upon earth,
your saving power among all the nations.
All the peoples will praise you, O God;
all the nations together will praise you.

May the nations be glad and shout for joy,
for you rule the world with justice.
You judge the peoples with fairness,
you guide all the nations on earth.

All the peoples will praise you, O God;
all the nations together will praise you.

The earth has brought forth its harvest;
for you, our God, have blessed us.
O God, continue to bless us!
May all the ends of the earth revere you!
