Lauds: Tuesday, wk 1

During Lent, this O.T. Canticle, based on Isaiah 55:6-12,
replaces the one for ordinary time

Seek God who can always be found.
Call on the Most High who is near.
Let the sinner reject evil ways,
and return to God who freely forgives.

God says, My thoughts are not like yours,
nor are your ways like my own.
As the heavens are high above the earth,
so my thoughts, my ways are above your own.

As rain and snow come down from heaven,
and do not return till they water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to eat.

So is my word that goes forth from my mouth;
it does not return to me unfulfilled.
It will accomplish whatever I intend,
and achieve what I sent it to do.

Yes, in joy you will depart;
in peace you will be brought back.
Mountains and hills will break out in song,
and all the trees will clap their hands.

Psalm 122: The joy of a Pilgrim

I rejoiced when they said to me:
Let us go to the house of God.
And then our feet were standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built as a city
bound firmly together.
The people go there on pilgrimage,
the tribes that belong to God.

In keeping with the law for Israel,
there God’s Name is praised.
There are the thrones of judgment,
of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
May they prosper who love you.
May peace reign within your walls,
and security in your homes.

For the sake of my relatives and friends
I say: Peace be within you.
For the sake of the house of God,
I will pray for your good.

Psalm 42: The prayer of an exile

As a deer longs for running streams,
so I long for you, my God!

With all my heart I am longing
for you, the living God.
When shall I come into your presence?
When shall I see your face?

Tears are my food day and night,
while they ask me: Where is your God?
These are the things I remember,
as I pour out my soul:

How I went with the festive crowd,
into your house, O God,
with songs of praise and thanksgiving,
to celebrate the feast.

Why are you downcast my soul,
why so restless within me?
Hope in God, I will again give thanks
to my Savior, my God.

My soul is downcast, O God,
therefore I think of you,
from the land of Jordan and Hermon,
from the hill of Mizar.

Deep is calling to deep,
as your torrents rage.
All your breakers and waves
have rolled over me.

All day my God bestows
such steadfast love;
this song is with me at night,
a prayer to the God of my life.

I say to God, my rock:
Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about in mourning
while my enemies oppress me?

I am crushed by my foes,
mocked and reviled,
while they ask me with scorn:
Where is your God?

Why are you downcast my soul,
why so restless within me?
Hope in God, I will again give thanks
to my Savior, my God.

O.T. Canticle, based on Isaiah 26:2-9,12,13

Open the gates; let the just nation enter,
the people who keep faith.
O God, you sustain in perfect peace,
those who put trust in you.

Trust in God who is an eternal Rock,
who humbles those in high places.
The lofty city tumbles to the dust,
is trampled by the footsteps of the poor.

You level the path of the just, O God;
we seek your way and your judgments.
Your name and your title
are the desire of our souls.

My heart yearns for you in the night;
my spirit within me keeps vigil for you.
When your judgment dawns upon the earth,
all who live there will learn justice.

O God, you will ordain peace for us.
You have accomplished all we have done.
Others with power have tried to rule us,
but your name alone we acknowledge.

Psalm 43: Longing for God's dwelling place

Give judgment for me and defend me
against a godless people.
Deliver me, O God,
from deceitful and wicked foes.

You are the God of my strength;
why have you cast me away?
Why must I go about in mourning,
while my enemies oppress me?

Send out your light and your truth,
that they may lead me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to the place where you dwell.

Then I will come to your altar, O God;
you are my joy, my delight.
With the lyre I will sing your praise,
O God, my God.

Why are you downcast, my soul?
why so restless within me?
Hope in God; I will again give thanks;
to my Savior, my God.
