Vespers: Sunday, wk 2

Psalm 113  (God exalts the humble)

Sing praise, faithful servants of God;
praise the Name of the Most High!
Blessed be the Name of the Holy One,
both now and forever.

From the rising to the setting of the sun,
may the Name of God be praised!
The Most High is above all nations;
God’s glory is beyond the heavens.

Who is like our God,
in heaven or on earth,
who is enthroned on high,
yet looks down into the depths.

From the dust God lifts up the poor,
and raises the needy from the dunghill,
to seat them in a place of honor,
among the nobles of the people.

God gives the barren woman a home,
makes her the joyful mother of children.

Psalm 138  (Thanksgiving to a faithful God)

I thank you, God, with all my heart,
in the presence of the angels I sing praise.
I bow down before your holy temple,
to praise your name and give thanks.

With unfailing love you have exalted
your Name and your promise, O God.
You answered me when I called;
you gave me new courage and strength.

All rulers on earth will praise you,
when they hear the words you speak.
With song they will extol your ways:
“How great is your glory, O God!”

From on high you have concern for the lowly;
you take note of the proud from afar.
When my enemies gather around me,
you will save me from their rage.

You extend your right hand to help me.
Your plans for me you will fulfill.
Faithful God, your love is eternal;
do not forsake the work of your hands.

Psalm 62  (Trust in God alone)

My heart finds rest only in God,
from whom comes my salvation.
God is my rock and my safety,
my defense; I stand unshaken.

How long will threats assail me,
trying to crush me down,
as against a leaning wall,
or a tottering fence?

There are some who plan deception,
who take delight in falsehood.
Their lips speak a blessing,
while in their hearts they curse.

My heart finds rest only in God
in whom my hope stands firm.
God is my rock and my safety,
my defense; I stand unshaken.

God alone is my Savior,
my rock of strength, my refuge.

O people, trust God at all times.
Pour out your hearts in prayer;
the Holy One is our refuge.

Lowly people are merely a breath;
people of rank are an illusion.
When placed on the scales together,
all of them are lighter than air.

Put no trust in extortion,
in robbery no false pride.
Even if riches increase,
do not set your heart upon wealth.

Once God has spoken;
twice I have heard:

All power belongs to God,
whose constant love never fails;
and God rewards all people
according to their deeds.

N.T. Canticle, based on Revelation 5:7-10,12,13

The lamb came up to take the scroll
from the One seated on the throne.
The four living creatures fell prostrate,
and with them the twenty-four elders.

They fell down before the Lamb,
and they sang a new song:

You are worthy to take the scroll
and break open its seals,
because you were sacrificed;
with your blood you ransomed for God,

Saints from every race and tongue,
of every tribe and nation.
You made them a kingdom and priests,
to serve our God and to rule the world.

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth,
all wisdom and might,
honor, glory and blessing!
