Vespers: Tuesday, wk 1

During Lent, this O.T. Canticle, based on Isaiah 1:12-20,
replaces the one for ordinary time

When you come to appear before me,
who asked this from your hand?
Trample my courts no more;
to bring offerings is futile.

When you stretch out your hands,
I will hide my eyes from you;
I will not listen to your many prayers.
Wash and make yourselves clean;

Take your evil deeds out of my sight.
Cease doing evil, learn to do good.
Seek justice and help the oppressed;
defend the orphan, plead for the widow.

Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be like snow;
though they are red like crimson,
they shall be like wool.

If you are willing to obey,
you will eat good things in the land,
but if you refuse and rebel,
you will be devoured by the sword.

Psalm 23  (God is our shepherd and guide)

The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing that I lack.
In green pastures God brings me repose.

You lead me to waters of peace;
you renew my spirit, O God.
You guide me along the right path,
ever true to your Name.

Though I walk in a valley of darkness,
in the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for you are with me,
your rod and your staff give me strength.

You spread a table before me,
in the presence of my foes.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

Your goodness and love are with me
every day of my life.
I will live in your house, O God,
forever and ever!

Psalm 27  (Fearless trust in God)

God is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
God is the strength of my life;
of whom should I be afraid?

If evildoers attack me,
to devour my flesh,
it is my enemies themselves
who will stumble and fall.

If an army stands against me,
my heart will have no fear.
If the line of battle threatens,
my trust will not be shaken.

One thing I ask of God,
and this I desire:
to live in the house of God
all the days of my life,

To gaze on the beauty of God,
whom I seek in the temple.
The Most High is my shelter
in the day of evil.

God will hide and protect me,
set me high upon a rock.
Even now my head is raised high
above the foes who surround me.

I will offer sacrifice with joy,
make music and sing in God’s house.
O God, hear the sound of my call;
be gracious and answer.

My heart is speaking of you:
“Seek the face of God.”
It is you whom I seek, O God;
do not hide your face from me.

In your anger do not cast me out,
for you are my help.
Do not abandon or forsake me,
O God, my Savior!

Though my father and mother forsake me,
you will care for me.
Lead me along the right path,
show me the way because of my foes.

Do not let me be handed over
to the will of my oppressors.
False witnesses rise up against me;
they breathe out violence.

I know I will see God’s loving kindness,
in the land of the living!
Wait for God! Let your hearts be strong;
have courage and wait for God.

Psalm 54  (Confident prayer for God’s help)

Save me, O God, by your Name;
vindicate me with your power.
Listen to my prayer, O Most High;
hear the words I speak.

Against me the proud have risen up;
ruthless foes seek my life.
You have no place in their thoughts.

But you, faithful God, are my helper;
I know you sustain my life.
The malice of my foes you repay;
you will destroy their evil plans.

I will freely offer sacrifice and praise you,
for the goodness of your Name, O God.
You rescued me from every trouble,
and I can look with triumph on my foes.

N.T.Canticle, based on Romans 12:1,2,5,6,9-13,18

Remember the mercies of God,
and offer your very selves,
as a sacrifice pleasing to God;
this is worship in mind and in heart.

Do not model your behavior
on the contemporary world.
Be transformed with renewal of mind,
to discern God’s will and what is good.

All of us, though we are many,
make up one body in Christ,
and we, as different parts,
are all joined to one another.

Let your love be sincere;
turn away from what is evil,
hold on to what is good.
Think of others before yourselves.

Do not be half-hearted in service,
but faithful and fervent in spirit.
The One you are serving is God.

Rejoice in hope, be patient in trial,
and persevere in prayer.
Share with God’s people in need.
If possible, live in peace with all!
